Send an email using confidential mode

About: You can use Gmail's confidential mode to help protect sensitive information from unauthorized access. You can use confidential mode to set an expiration date for messages or revoke access at any time. Recipients of the confidential message will have options to forward, copy, print, and download disabled. Click here to view Google's help article covering confidential mode.



Open Gmail and compose a new message



Toggle Confidential Mode on



Configure options then click save

For sensitive information we recommend changing the Expiration to 1 day. It defaults to 1 week.




Edit and send your email



If you enabled SMS passcode, you will be prompted to enter the persons cell phone number so that they can verify their identity.



What your recipient will see

If you turn on the passcode option:

If you enabled SMS passcode, your recipient will be prompted to send a passcode to their cell number to verify their identity.





After verifying their identity, they can view the message and attachments. However they will not be able to download the email or attachment.

In this example, the attached excel spreadsheet can be viewed in the recipients web browser but cannot be edited or downloaded.



If you do not turn the passcode option on

You recipient will receive an email saying you've sent them a message using Gmail's confidential mode and prompt them to click a button to view the email.



After clicking this button they will be prompted to confirm their identity and will need to click the Send Passcode button on the page.



An email with the passcode will be sent to their email. Once they confirm their identity they will be able to view your email and any attachments.



To remove access to the email you sent you can open your sent items and find the email you sent and click Remove access.
